Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee Confer Seventy-Two Lawyers With SAN Rank

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, LPPC, has conferred Seventy-Two lawyers with the award of the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN for 2021.

LPPC had shortlisted 130 lawyers for the rank, however seventy-two candidates are successful for the award.

The 130 lawyers shortlisted comprised 95 candidates from the category of Advocates and 35 from the academics.

However, after the screening and interview, only 62 were successful from the Advocates category and 10 from the academics.

In a statement, the Acting Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and secretary of the LPPC, Mrs. Hajo Bello, says the decision to elevate the 72 candidates to the prestigious rank of SAN was taken at the LPPC’s 149th plenary session held at the Supreme Court.

Among the successful candidates is the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Mr Tony Ojukwu; a former Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mr Ikeazor Akaraiwe and a former Secretary of the NBA, Mr. Emeka Obegolu.

While a 91-year-old Professor of Law, Professor Ajagbe Oyewo, who is also a traditional chief in Oyo State, was among the 10 academics who were elevated into the prestigious rank.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, is expected to swear in the new senior advocates during an inauguration ceremony to be held on December 8 at the Supreme Court premises in Abuja
