Portable’s Followers Charged with Assault and Obstruction in Ogun State

The police in Ogun State have charged nine followers of the renowned singer Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, in a Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta.

They are accused of assaulting officers from the Ota Zonal Planning Office of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

The individuals charged include Nurudeen Warris, Adetola Alashe, Samuel Adeleke, Oluwaseun Ayenuwa, Oluwapelumi Adeosun, Gospel Kanu, Precious Ohiegebo, Ifeoluwa Babatunde, and Fatimo Muhammed.

They face five serious offences, including felony, assault and obstruction, armed threats with cutlasses and guns, conduct likely to incite a breach of peace, and intentions to kill.

Despite the gravity of the charges, the defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Police Prosecutor Sunday Ekong presented evidence to the court that these offences occurred on Wednesday at approximately 10:00 AM in Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu, Sango-Ota, Ogun State.

He asserted that the defendants, along with Portable who remains at large unlawfully assaulted, restricted, and obstructed three town planners: Abidemi Onabanjo, Ramon Lateef, and Akinpelumi Oyero, while they were executing their official duties at Odogwu Bar, which is owned by Portable.

Ekong underscored that the defendants and Portable were armed with dangerous weapons and displayed behaviour that could incite public unrest, with clear intentions to harm the town planning officers.

These charges clearly violate Sections 516, 356(3), 80, 249(d), and 320 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

In her ruling, Magistrate Mrs O.M. Somefun granted the defendants bail set at N5 million each, mandating that they provide sureties who are licensed bondsmen registered with the Ogun State Government.

The case is scheduled for a hearing on March 17.
