
A Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, has sentenced a dismissed police sergeant, attached with Special Protection Unit, Ologunowa Ojo, to seven years Imprisonment over manslaughter charges.
Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo gave the verdict after founding him guilty.
The court finds that the prosecution was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the firing of the AK47 rifle by the defendant caused the death of the deceased.
Justice Taiwo however, said that the time spent in prison custody while undergoing trial shall be discounted from the prison sentence.
Ojo was said to have shot dead one Taiye Akande in the Shapati, Ajah area of Lagos State.

The sad incident happened on February 3, 2016, during Ojo’s security duty at Frajend Investments Nigeria Limited, located at Akodo, Shapati area of Elemo Ajah in the Lagos Island, where he serves as a guard
Akande was said to have had an argument with the police sergeant after he (Akande) allegedly sat on the company’s fence.
The policeman was said to have shot him in the buttocks, and he was rushed to the Akodo General Hospital, Akodo, where he died.
