Court Nullifies Rivers State N800bn Budget While Restoring Assembly Speaker

The budget signed into law by the Rivers State Governor, Simi Fubara for the year 2024, worth N800bn, has been nullified by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Last December, Fubara presented the N800bn 2024 Appropriation Bill to a faction of the state House of Assembly, comprising four lawmakers. Following the passage of the budget by the lawmakers, Fubara subsequently signed the budget into law.

The Rivers Assembly became factionalised following an attempt by 27 lawmakers loyal to ex-governor Nyesom Wike to impeach Fubara.

During the hearing, the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, held that everything the four lawmakers did was null and void.

The court also recognised Amaewhule as the speaker of the state assembly.

More details will be provided later.
