Lawmaker Unveils 480-Capacity Skills Acquisition Centre in Ojo

The member representing Ojo Federal Constituency, Hon. Seyi Sowunmi, has launched a state-of-the-art Skills Acquisition and Capacity Building Centre aimed at equipping youths and women in the constituency with highly sought-after vocational and digital skills.

The centre, which has the capacity to train over 480 learners per cohort, is designed to promote self-reliance, job creation, and economic empowerment across communities in Ojo, Iba, Okokomaiko, Ijanikin, Agbara and surrounding areas.

Speaking at the unveiling, Hon. Sowunmi said the initiative was conceived to address unemployment, underemployment and the low access to viable economic opportunities within the constituency.

“This programme is not just another intervention. It is a seed being planted for a stronger and more prosperous Ojo,” he said. “The world no longer rewards certificates alone. Skills, innovation, creativity and competence now determine success.”

He noted that Ojo’s strong entrepreneurial base, especially with markets like the Alaba International Market, makes skill acquisition a critical driver of development in the constituency.

Training at the centre will cover computer hardware and GSM repair, garment making and fashion design, digital skills for teenage girls, beauty and cosmetology, agro-processing, mechanical and construction trades, as well as entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

Sowunmi said participants would receive mentorship to help transform their acquired skills into viable businesses. He added that the goal is to build a constituency where young people become self-employed and employers of labour, while women are empowered to start and grow small businesses.

“This is a new dawn for Ojo,” the lawmaker said, describing the initiative as a new chapter where competence becomes the new qualification and empowerment becomes the foundation for development.
