The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the upgrade of the Nigeria Police Force’s Legal Section into a full-fledged Directorate of Legal Services.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Muyiwa Adejobi, announced the development in a statement on Tuesday, saying the move is aimed at boosting institutional capacity, operational efficiency, and aligning the Force’s legal operations with global policing standards.
The new Directorate will serve as the apex legal authority of the NPF, overseeing legal training, policy reviews, and engagements with prosecutorial bodies, the judiciary, and other justice sector stakeholders.
It will also create a stronger institutional identity for the Force’s legal work and secure recognition both locally and internationally.
The IGP named AIG Ohiozoba O. Ehiede, psc (+), as the pioneer Director of the Directorate. AIG Ehiede, a seasoned officer with a distinguished service record, is expected to lead the Directorate in strengthening prosecutorial success, enhancing justice delivery, and improving public trust in police operations.
Egbetokun urged all personnel—particularly police lawyers—to support the Directorate’s mission to deliver legal services with professionalism, transparency, and efficiency.
