Judges Threaten Indefinitely Adjournment in IPOB Leader Kanu’s Trial

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has threatened to indefinitely adjourn the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), if he further delays the trial.

At the resumption of the trial, Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, presented some conditions that must be met by the court for his client to submit to trial.

Kanu’s conditions include the restoration of his bail, relocation from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody, and free access to his lawyers to prepare for his trial.

However, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the prosecuting lawyer, objected to these requests, calling them frivolous, vexatious, irritating, and unmeritorious.

Justice Nyako scheduled a ruling on the requests for May 20 but insisted that progress must be made in the case on Wednesday by allowing the prosecution to call witnesses.

The judge warned that if there was no progress, the trial would be adjourned indefinitely until Kanu was ready to proceed.

The judge gave Kanu’s legal team and relatives in court some time to decide on their next step.

Justice Nyako fixed the ruling on the requests by Kanu’s lawyer for May 20 but insisted that progress must be made in the case on Wednesday by allowing the prosecution to open its case by calling witnesses.

Kanu is being tried for offences bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony before a Federal High Court in Abuja.
