A legal scholar, Professor Chris Nwaokobia, has called for a review of Nigeria’s criminal justice system to ensure speedy trial.
He stated this in a telephone interview with Top Court News on the conviction of the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Kalu for fraudulent enrichment.
Professor Nwaokobia, who is the Convener of Country First Movement, said the trial and conviction of the senator which took twelve years to conclude was too long and resources consuming.
Speaking on the profile of the convict, Professor Nwaokobia said the electorate needed to always look at the character of people they voted into political offices.
Another lawyer, Mr Jide Ologun, however thinks that the wheel of justice may appear to have run slowly, but it had surely caught up with the former governor of Abia State.
He said the number of former governors found guilty of corrupt practices while in office was alarming and shameful.
Mr Ologun noted that with the level of corruption at every level of governance, it was difficult for there to be development, especially at the grassroots.
