The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law, NBA-SBL, begins its 17th Annual International Business Law Conference today at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.
This was announced by the Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee and Treasurer of the council, Mrs Ayoyinka Olajide-Awosedo at a press briefing.
Olajide-Awosedo, in her address, said that the conference was themed “The Nigeria Business Landscape- Priorities of Law, Policy, and Regulation,”
She said one of the objectives of the conference was how to set an agenda to revive the economy owing the new government in place.
She said that the conference will also focus on what regulations are pertinent to revive our economy to encourage investors to attract talent.
“As lawyers, there are a plethora of laws that .affect the economy and so we want to sit in the room with all the relevant stakeholders, industries regulators, and policies makers and look at how to move our economy forward.
“Looking at the impact of technology, we will look at how Nigeria can peg herself with the developed countries,”
“Outside of the sessions and networking opportunities, we have a regulatory clinic and we will be sponsoring 25 young lawyers to attend the conference,”
Olajide-Awosedo also said that the conference aimed at exploring recent developments in the Nigerian business law environment, how it had affected businesses, and what needed to be done to help businesses thrive.
According to her, numerous activities had been set aside to grace the annual conference among which was “lawyers got talent competition” and the winner would get cash price.
She added that the conference provided a platform for stakeholders in the Nigerian business environment to address the issues that affected the business environment and by extension, businesses operating in it.
The Chairman of SBL, Dr. Adeoye Adefulu, in his welcome address, said that the council had a keen interest and has made various landmark successes in developing the economy of the country.
Adefulu said experts from the public and private sectors, business lawyers, and other stakeholders in the business law environment would converge to discuss how the regulations of the economic sector would be revived.
“We have regular regulatory interventions we shall be working with and we have also arranged internships programs for lawyers with regulatory agencies as well,” he said.
The Chairman of the Program and Content Sub Committee, Mr. Oludare Sembore, in his remark, said that the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would be the special guest of honor and chief host while many other dignitaries around the world in the economic sector would also grace a conference.
“The NBA President, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, (SAN), and other senior members of the legal profession will also be in attendance.
“Other senior members of the bar, the bench, and the chief economist from KPMG will also be in attendance.
“We shall also be having international speakers such as Dr. Folashade Adeyemo, an assistant professor at the University of Liverpool and Dr. Timi Popoola, the Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Ltd are also part of the panelists,” he said.
Sembore added that the conference would also focus on issues relating to agriculture, business, entertainment, and the like.
The NBA-SBL had remained a converging point for decision-makers in both the public and private sectors, policy formulators, regulators, and industry practitioners seeking solutions to the myriad challenges limiting businesses, since its inception in 2004.
