From Campus to Court: Inside UNILAG Rape Allegation Probe

A 20-year-old undergraduate of the University of Lagos broke down in court on Wednesday as she narrated how a routine academic interaction with a lecturer, Samuel Obinna Ojogbo, allegedly turned into a traumatic ordeal.

Testifying before Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos State High Court, the student recounted that after an examination, the lecturer invited her to his office where he allegedly forced himself on her despite her resistance.

Amid tears, the witness told the court that she reported the incident to university authorities but was initially met with skepticism, with concerns raised over lack of evidence.

Determined to seek justice, she said she escalated the matter through institutional channels, including Servicom, the police, and a sexual assault referral centre.

The Lagos State Government had arraigned Ojogbo on charges bordering on rape and sexual assault.

According to the prosecution, the alleged offences occurred on August 22, 2025, within the university premises.

The state further alleged that the defendant engaged in non-consensual sexual intercourse with the victim, an offence punishable under Section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Ojogbo is also accused of sexual assault by allegedly touching the victim inappropriately, contrary to Section 263(1) of the law.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Justice Ogala subsequently adjourned the case till April 27 for continuation of trial.
