The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will on Monday, September 29, 2025, administer the oath of office to 57 newly elevated Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at the Main Courtroom of the Supreme Court in Abuja.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by Dr. Festus Akande, Director of Information and Public Relations of the Supreme Court, the event will serve as a highlight of the formal commencement of the 2025/2026 legal year of the apex court.
Justice Kekere-Ekun is expected to deliver the traditional State of the Judiciary address, reviewing the performance of the Supreme Court during the 2024/2025 legal year and providing insight into ongoing developments within the judiciary.
“In line with long-standing tradition, the CJN will deliver a State of the Judiciary address with a view to highlighting the state of the Supreme Court in particular, and the Nigerian Judiciary in general, in the 2024/2025 legal year,” the statement read.
Other critical voices in the legal profession, including the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, will also make presentations.
Their contributions are expected to focus on challenges confronting the justice system and reforms required to strengthen judicial administration.
The Supreme Court had embarked on its annual vacation on July 21, 2025, after what was described as a “remarkably successful” legal year.
All programmes to mark the commencement of the new legal year are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
It will be recalled that on July 24, 2025, the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee announced the names of the 57 lawyers approved for elevation. Of this number, 56 are practising advocates, while one is an academic.
