A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ajah has convicted and sentenced Chukwudi Okonkwo Goodness to 74 years imprisonment for stealing and issuing dud cheques amounting to N360 million.
Justice Josephine Oyefeso delivered the judgment on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, bringing to a close a prolonged trial that began with Goodness’ arraignment in June 2016 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The defendant was found guilty on 32 out of 33 counts bordering on fraudulent conversion of funds and issuance of dishonoured cheques to the complainant, Henry Nnadike.
The offence took place between June and July 2015.
In her ruling, Justice Oyefeso sentenced Goodness to seven years for stealing and two years each on 30 counts related to issuing dud cheques. An additional seven-year sentence was imposed on count 33.
All sentences are to run concurrently. He was acquitted on one count of possessing documents containing false pretence.
The court also ordered him to pay restitution of N215 million within 30 days, stating that he may be considered for a fine thereafter.
Justice Oyefeso held that the prosecution, led by T.J. Banjo, proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, following testimony from four witnesses and the presentation of documentary evidence.
The court’s decision underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding financial integrity and deterring white-collar crime.
