Court Grant Police Remand Order Against Suspect

A Benue State Upper Area Court sitting in Makurdi, has granted further remand order of a suspected armed robber, John Agada, in police custody for completion of investigation.

The accused who lives at Ampia, Rice Mill area of Otukpo was charged by the police for alleged criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Veronica Shaagee, told the court that on July 22, 2020, one Awuna Terkumbur of Aliade, Gwer East Local Government Area of the state, reported a case of robbery at the police station.

In his statement, Terkumbur said on July 2, 2020, he conveyed a man, whose name and address was unknown to him, on his unregistered Bajaj motorcycle with chassis number MD2A18AYILWK from Aliade to the house of Agada, who later introduced themselves as in-laws.

The complainant stated that after the introduction, they asked him (Terkumbur) to convey them to a car dealer in Otukpo to buy a car and as soon as they arrived, the said John Agada and his in-law conspired together and robbed him of his motorcycle worth N248,000.

According to the police prosecutor, the development led to the arrest of John Agada while his in-law evades arrest.

Sergeant Shaagee added that the offences contravened the provisions of sections 6(b) and 1(1) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act, 2004.

He therefore urged the court to grant police further remand order to be able to complete their investigation.

The presiding judge, Mrs Rose Iorshe, granted the application and adjourned the case till August 27, 2020, for further mention.

The defendant’s plea was not taken.
