Justice Adegbola Adeniyi of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has ordered the immediate and unconditional release of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele.
Justice Adeniyi granted Emefiele’s Motion Ex-parte for his release from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, custody until the Originating Motion is heard.
The court directed the EFCC to present Emefiele in court on Monday, November 6, 2023, for the hearing of the substantive Motion on Notice and to entertain the bail application.
In an application filed before the court, the applicant named the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, and the EFCC itself as respondents.
The applicant, Emefiele, filed an ex-parte motion before the court, seeking an order to compel the EFCC to release him from custody while his fundamental rights enforcement suit is being determined.
Alternatively, he requested the court to grant him bail.
The President, Bola Tinubu, suspended Emefiele from his position as the head of the apex bank on June 9.
