
Domestic Violence: Husband Lands in Court for Assaulting Wife
Ifeanyi Akachukwu has been charged with assaulting his wife before Magistrate Patrick Nwaka of the Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Two counts of assault were filed against the defendant.
It was alleged that he assaulted Chioma Akachukwu following a disagreement.
The prosecution alleged that in October 2022, the defendant knocked out an incisor tooth of the victim after dragging her to his room during a disagreement.
In addition, he beat her severely, resulting in serious injuries. She was also alleged to be strangled after he twisted her hands behind her back.
According to the prosecutor, the alleged offences occurred sometime in October 2022 and were in violation of Sections 173 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
Magistrate Nwaka imposed bail conditions of N100,000 with four sureties of the same amount on the defendant after he pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Nwaka adjourned the case until June 10, 2024.
Between August 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023, the Lagos State Government recorded 5,624 domestic and sexual violence cases.
