A Lagos Special Offences Court has prevented an attempt by the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to disrupt ongoing trial proceedings, which include charges of abuse of office and multi-billion dollar fraud against him.
Emefiele’s Counsel, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Olalekan Ojo, SAN, argued that the court lacked the constitutional jurisprudence to hear the charge against his client.
He requested that the court consider jurisdictional objections before proceeding with the case.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, urged the court to dismiss the application, stating that it was an attempt by the defendant to delay justice.
Justice Rahman Oshodi rejected Emefiele’s request to discontinue the hearing and deferred the ruling on the preliminary objection to the final judgment stage.
Emefiele was arraigned along with Henry Isioma Omole on an amended 26-count charge by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for an offence bordering on abuse of office regarding the allocation of billions of dollars
