Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who is a long-serving Speaker in Nigeria, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions as the reasons for his removal.
Following the impeachment, Obasa was succeeded by his deputy, Lasbat Miranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1. Miranda, a former Chief Whip of the House, is now the new Speaker.
In a subsequent reshuffle, Hon. Fatai Mojeed was elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
This development comes just days after a report surfaced detailing Obasa’s involvement in authorizing the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for the purchase of backup vehicles for lawmakers, among other controversial financial activities.
The erstwhile speaker was not at the plenary where he was removed.
Mr Obasa, 52, was first elected Speaker on June 8, 2015, and was the longest-serving member of the Lagos State Assembly having been elected into the state legislature since 2003.
The Clerk of the House, Mr Olalekan Onafeko has also been suspended.
