
The Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) has partnered with the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja, to launch an advocacy programme aimed at curbing building collapses in Lagos and Nigeria.
The event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, 2023, and will educate Nigerians on the dangers of building collapses in Lagos and how to prevent them.
During a conference in Ikeja, Lagos, Mr Oluseyi Olawumi, the Chairman of the NBA Ikeja branch, announced that several prominent speakers have been invited to participate in the one-day event.
The keynote speaker will be human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana. Other speakers include Dr Olawale Banmore, and Architect Gbolahan Oki, QS. Ayuba Akere, Dr Bamidele Onalaja, and other seasoned experts.
They will discuss the topic, “Building Collapse and Application of Punitive Laws in Lagos State”.
Bldr. Mrs Zulaikha Iyabode Bolarinwa, the Coordinator of BCPG Ikeja cell, explained that the guild was formed 15 years ago by professionals who were concerned about the high rate of building collapses in Lagos State and Nigeria.
She emphasized that while laws are crucial, enforcement is equally important. She further highlighted that the frequency of building collapses has increased due to a lack of punitive measures.
