A Federal High Court in Abuja has approved the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze 24 bank accounts across various banks due to allegations of terrorism financing.
Justice Emeka Nwite granted this order after EFCC lawyer Martha Babatunde filed an ex-parte motion, allowing the accounts to be frozen for 90 days while investigations are ongoing.
The motion, filed by Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, concerns accounts owned by Lawrence Lucky Eromosele, who is under investigation for kidnapping.
Investigators believe these accounts are linked to money laundering and terrorism financing activities, involving manipulation of the naira’s value through cryptocurrency exchanges.
Khalil, an investigator with the EFCC’s Special Investigation Team, stated that the group received threats against senior operatives, including specific demands for ransom payments.
He provided evidence of interactions between suspects and the operatives, as well as bank statements linked to the suspects.
After considering the EFCC’s request, Justice Nwite approved the motion and adjourned the case until March 24, 2025, for follow-up.
