Suspended Ogun Monarch Remanded in Custody Over Assault on Elderly Man

The case involving the suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has ignited widespread public condemnation following his arraignment for assaulting a 73-year-old man, Abraham Areola.

Ogunjobi was remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre after he failed to meet his bail conditions.

His arrest and subsequent prosecution were triggered by a viral video that captured him physically and verbally abusing the elderly man.

This incident has sparked debates about the abuse of power among traditional leaders.

The Ogun State Police Command has charged Ogunjobi with conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

The charge sheet (MH2b8c/2025) outlines accusations that he and others still at large slapped Areola forced him to kneel in public, and threatened him.

Many Nigerians have expressed outrage over the footage, which shows Ogunjobi berating Areola with curses while claiming he had powerful connections that could lead to the victim being imprisoned.

The video has intensified calls for greater accountability from traditional rulers and former law enforcement officers.

Ogunjobi, a retired police officer, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate F. A. Iroko, who set bail at N5 million per surety.

With the case adjourned to March 6, human rights activists are closely monitoring the proceedings, viewing it as a critical test case for justice and the rule of law in Nigeria.
