US Court Jails Nigerian Man for Sextortion Scheme Linked to Teen’s Death

A 25-year-old Nigerian national, Samuel Abiodun, has been sentenced to five years in prison by a United States federal court for his involvement in a sextortion scheme that tragically led to the death of a teenage victim.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, David Metcalf, announced on Tuesday that Abiodun received his sentence from U.S. District Judge Joel Slomsky.

Abiodun had earlier pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud in connection with the case.

Abiodun and a co-conspirator, Afeez Adewale, were arrested in Nigeria by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and extradited to the U.S. in July 2024.

A third suspect, Olamide Aina, was also extradited and charged alongside the others in August 2024.

Aina pleaded guilty in May 2025 to multiple offences, including cyberstalking, interstate threats to damage reputation, extortion, money laundering conspiracy, and wire fraud.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 11 and could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Speaking on Abiodun’s role, Metcalf described him as the “financial middleman” of the operation.

“He played a critical role in this sextortion scheme that inflicted deep trauma on the victim and lasting devastation on the victim’s family,” Metcalf said.

“These schemes target vulnerable and scared young people for financial gain, with no regard for the consequences,” he added.

“Through this prosecution, we are holding accountable those whose actions caused irreversible harm, and we’re sending a strong message: the Department of Justice will find and prosecute anyone who preys on innocent Americans.”

While Abiodun has now been sentenced and Aina awaits sentencing, Adewale remains in Nigeria pending extradition.

He has been charged in absentia with conspiracy to launder money and wire fraud.

Metcalf expressed appreciation for the cooperation of Nigerian authorities in the case.

He commended the efforts of Nigeria’s Attorney General, the Ministry of Justice’s International Criminal Justice Cooperation Department, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for facilitating the extradition process.
