OPay Impersonation: Police Arraign 31-Year-Old Woman Over Alleged Fraud

A 31-year-old woman, Funke Femiloba, has been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly impersonating a staff member of OPay Digital Services Limited and obtaining money from members of the public under false pretences.

Femiloba was arraigned on September 24, 2026, on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and obtaining money by false pretences.

The case, marked MIK/P/53/26, was brought before the court by the police over alleged offences said to have been committed in Ikeja, Lagos, in September 2026.

According to the prosecution, Femiloba allegedly worked with other persons, who are still at large, to obtain money from unsuspecting members of the public through false representations.

In the first count, the police alleged that the defendant conspired with the persons at large to obtain money by false pretences, an offence said to be contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The second count accused Femiloba of falsely presenting herself as a staff member of OPay Digital Services Limited, despite allegedly knowing that the representation was false.

The prosecution said the alleged impersonation contravened Section 78 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The police further alleged in the third count that Femiloba and her alleged accomplices conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by misleading members of the public.

The offence was said to be contrary to Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

In the fourth count, the prosecution alleged that Femiloba and others obtained money from members of the public by false pretences.

However, the specific amount allegedly obtained was not stated in the charge made available to the media.

The police said the alleged offence contravened Section 313 and is punishable under Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Following her arraignment, the court ordered that Femiloba be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
