Justice Mojisola Dada of the Lagos State Special Offences Court has convicted and sentenced Remilekun Temitope Balogun-Okedeyi for her involvement in a visa racketeering scheme.
The conviction followed the defendant’s guilty plea to an amended charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in Charge No. ID/27346C/2025.
At the proceedings, the prosecution team led by Yvonne William-Mbata, alongside R.N. Eze and O.E. Pereira, informed the court of the amended charge. Upon it being read, the defendant, who was visibly emotional, admitted guilt.
In the course of the trial, the prosecution called its witness, Mr. Onyema, who testified that the case stemmed from a petition by the British Deputy High Commission.
He told the court that investigations revealed the defendant was a beneficiary of a visa racketeering syndicate and had falsely represented herself as a staff member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to the British mission.
The defendant was represented by Mrs. Grace Adenubi of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.
In her judgment, Justice Dada held that the guilty plea of the defendant, coupled with the uncontroverted evidence before the court, established her culpability.
The court accordingly found her guilty as charged.
Justice Dada thereafter sentenced the defendant to one year imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₦500,000.
The court also ordered that she undertake community service within the court premises.
The judge further directed that the convict enter into a bond to be of good behaviour.
