The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is celebrating its 70th anniversary, marking decades of unwavering commitment to press freedom, ethical journalism, and the defense of journalists’ rights.
In a message to members, NUJ President Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi expressed gratitude for the dedication and resilience of journalists across the country.
He highlighted the union’s crucial role in upholding democratic values, ensuring accountability, and amplifying the voices of the marginalized.
“Over the past seven decades, the NUJ has been pivotal in championing press freedom, defending the rights of journalists, and maintaining ethical standards in the industry,” Abdullahi stated.
“Your commitment to speaking truth to power, holding those in authority accountable, and giving a voice to the voiceless is truly admirable and inspiring.”

Founded in 1954, the NUJ has been instrumental in advocating for media rights and fostering a responsible press culture. Over the years, it has served as a strong pillar in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, often confronting challenges such as censorship, harassment, and media repression.
With this anniversary, Abdullahi called on journalists to renew their dedication to truth, justice, and accountability, ensuring that the press remains a beacon of democracy for future generations.
