Nigeria Police Charges Estate Agent with Swindling Home Seeker of N13m

The Nigeria Police have brought charges against an estate agent, Sunday Asibe, at the Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos State for swindling a home seeker out of N13m.

Asibe, also known as John Asibe, is facing three counts of fraud, obtaining by pretence, and stealing.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Cyriacus Osuji, alleged that Asibe defrauded a home seeker of N13 million between February and May 2024 in the Igando area of Lagos State.

Osuji claimed that Asibe fraudulently obtained the money from Alhaji Suleiman Bawale under the pretence of selling him a plot of land.

Asibe collected the money in two instalments of N8 million and N5 million.

The prosecutor further stated that Asibe failed to deliver the land after taking the initial N8 million in February and later obtained an additional N5 million in May with the same unfulfilled promise.

The prosecutor mentioned that the offences committed contravened Sections 313, 280 (1) (a) (b) and were punishable under Sections 314 (1) (a) (b) (3) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Asibe pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Feyikemi George granted Asibe bail in the sum of N1 million, with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties are required to provide three months’ bank statements showing a balance of N1 million and have their addresses verified.

The case was adjourned until October 30, 2024, for a mention.
