The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday opposed the bail application of a former Director of Finance of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, Felix Njoku, in the ongoing alleged ₦2.04 billion money laundering trial before Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe of the Lagos Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja.
Counsel to the defendant, Mordecai Adejo, urged the court to allow Njoku to continue enjoying the interim bail earlier granted to him, arguing that he had consistently complied with the court’s directives and reported to the EFCC office as required.
However, prosecution counsel, Abba Muhammed, SAN, opposed the application, insisting that the defendant might abscond and interfere with prosecution witnesses if released on bail.
After listening to both parties, Justice Abike-Fadipe reserved ruling on the bail application till June 2, 2026.
The prosecution thereafter opened its case by calling its first witness, Clement Ngbolu, a compliance officer with Zenith Bank Plc.
Led in evidence by the prosecution, the witness told the court that Zenith Bank received a letter from the EFCC in June 2025 requesting the statement of account of FC Njoku and Company Ltd.
He said the documents were printed from the bank’s system, verified and forwarded to the anti-graft agency.
The court admitted the EFCC letter, the bank’s response and account opening documents as exhibits without objection from the defence.
The EFCC had arraigned Njoku alongside three other senior NRC officials over alleged fraud and money laundering amounting to over ₦2.04 billion.
Njoku, who is facing a 17-count charge involving alleged unlawful enrichment and money laundering of ₦736.3 million, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The case was adjourned till May 12, 2026 for continuation of trial.
