Land Broker Landed in Prison Over Libel Charges

Kingsley Nwankwo, a land broker, has been arrested and remanded in custody by the Lagos police for allegedly making slanderous and defamatory statements on social media against Gtext Homes and its Chairman Dr Stephen Akintayo.

The accusations state that Nwankwo conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace, resulting in irreparable financial loss for the company and its chairman.

A petition was filed against Nwankwo by Gtext Homes, which was approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions, leading to a preliminary hearing at the Magistrate Court in Ikoyi.

During the hearing, Nwankwo was granted bail contingent upon the fulfilment of specific bail conditions which he could not meet.

The case has been assigned to the Magistrate Court in Ikoyi, where a trial has been fixed to commence on 12 to 14th February 2024.

Nwankwo was arraigned on November 29, 2023, and is to remain in custody.

The Nigerian police are taking steps to ensure the safety of businesses and their owners online and offline, evidenced by the swift arrest and prosecution of Nwankwo.
