Painter to Spend the Rest of His Life in Prison Due to Lack of Control over Sexual Desire
The Lagos Court for Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence in Ikeja has sentenced a painter to life imprisonment for raping a 20-year-old.
The Court ruled that Oluwasegun violated the survivor’s rights to sexual intimacy without her consent on July 19, 2021, at 3:45 a.m. in Ikorodu, by having sexual relations with her without consent.
After ruling in favour of the prosecution who presented the defendant’s confessional statement as evidence, Justice Rahman Oshodi sentenced the defendant.
The special court found Oluwasegun’s confession in which he admitted raping the survivor to “meet the standards of the Supreme Court and prove the defendant’s guilt in a direct, positive, and unequivocal manner.”
According to the judge, it is clear from the defendant’s confessional statement that he raped the prosecutrix (name withheld) out of love, but he could not tell her as she was new to the compound.
In Justice Oshodi’s explanation, the defendant is a painter who lives in the same building as the survivor, a student at LASUTECH, the Lagos State University of Science and Technology.

As a result of the survivor’s report the following day, LASUSTECH’s student union got the police to arrest the defendant.
Judge said the defendant wrote a voluntary statement admitting to the offence before the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), who also visited the scene.
The defendant, however, told Justice Oshodi during trial that he was robbed the day of the crime and that the police beat him and forced him to sign the statement, which he did not write.
Justice Oshodi asserted that he did not believe the defendant when he stated that he was forced to sign the confession.
“The court found that your attempt to mislead the court shows that you are not remorseful and signifies your disregard for the rule of law”.
During the trial, the prosecution called one witness, the IPO, while the defense counsel called three witnesses: the defendant’s mother, the defendant himself, and a friend of the defendant.”
