A three-member panel of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has refused to release former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, on bail pending the hearing of his appeal against a 72-year jail term for laundering N868.47 million.
In a ruling delivered by Justice Adebukola Banjoko, the appellate court held that Nwabuoku’s application, which was predicated on alleged deteriorating health, lacked merit and was accordingly dismissed.
Nwabuoku, who was convicted and sentenced by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on March 23, 2026, had argued that his medical condition required treatment beyond the facilities available to inmates at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
Opposing the request, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) maintained that no medical evidence showed that the former AGF could not continue receiving adequate treatment while in custody.
The anti-graft agency further contended that releasing him on bail would erode public confidence in the administration of criminal justice and the nation’s anti-corruption campaign.
The appellate court agreed with the prosecution’s position, leaving Nwabuoku to remain in custody as his appeal against the conviction proceeds.
